By using an Ethernet router, you can connect to the Internet without worrying about the interference that can happen with a wireless connection. For certain businesses, that means increased productivity. The setup between the Ethernet router and Windows XP computer can be configured with or without a network setup. If your computer is not recognizing your Ethernet hardware, you may be experiencing one of a few known issues between certain hardware and your operating system.
Reset
When you're having any type of connectivity issue, the first thing to do is reset the system. When your computer and hardware is turned off and back on, it may revert to its original settings. In addition, any new software you loaded to the computer will typically need a reset in order to take effect. Turn your computer off and remove the Ethernet cable, then unplug the Ethernet router. Wait about 60 seconds, reconnect the Ethernet cable and turn on the computer and router. Try your Internet connection again; if it's still not working, you'll need to do some additional troubleshooting.
Driver Check
In order for your Ethernet hardware and your computer to 'talk,' your computer must have certain drivers installed. Often, these drivers are installed when you plug the hardware into the Ethernet port on your computer. However, Windows XP is known to be incompatible with certain network devices, which could include the hardware you are trying to have detected. Check Microsoft's support page for a list of incompatible network adapters (see the link in Resources). If your adapter is on the list, you will have to update your router in order to connect to the Internet.
Update Driver
If you don't see your router on the list of incompatible types, you may need to update your computer with the right driver in order for the connection to work. Look at the model number on the router and visit the Web page of the company that manufactured it. Most companies provide an 'Updates' or 'Drivers' page that allows you to download the appropriate drivers for your device. In some cases, manufacturers release updates to their drivers, which may solve your connection problem. Once you've downloaded any drivers or driver updates, restart your computer and devices and try your connection again.
Network Diagnostics
Windows XP has a tool to help users diagnose common connection problems, but it's typically used with the help of a Windows XP support team member. Contact Windows XP support (see the link in Resources), then open Microsoft Internet Explorer, select the Tools menu and select 'Diagnose Connection Problems.' Then open the Start menu from the bottom-left of your screen, select 'Run,' and type the following text into the window that appears:
Windows Xp Network Controller Driver
%windir%network diagnosticxpnetdiag.exe
Click OK when you've finished typing. Based on the information that appears on your screen, the support staff may advise you to take further steps to solve your connection problem.
