The Winchester Model 70 is a bolt action sporting rifle. It has an iconic place inAmerican sporting culture and has been held in high regard byshooters since it was introduced in 1936, earning the epithet 'TheRifleman's Rifle'^[1]. Theaction has some design similarities to Mauser designs and it is a development of theearlier Winchester Model 54. The Model 70was originally manufactured by the Winchester Repeating ArmsCompany between 1936 and 1980. From the early 1980s until 2006,Winchester rifles were manufactured by U.S. Repeating Arms under an agreement withOlinCorporation, allowing USRA to use the Winchester name andlogo.^[2] Model70s were built in New Haven, Connecticut from 1936to 2006, when production ceased. In the fall of 2007, announcementswere made that Model 70 production would resume, and, as of 2008,new Winchester Model 70 rifles are now once more being made inColumbia, SC.

The Model70

In 1936, Winchester introduced the Model 70 bolt action rifle tothe American market. The Model 70 was largely based on the Model54, and is today still highly regarded by shooters and is oftencalled 'The Rifleman's Rifle.' In 1999 Shooting Timesmagazine named the Model 70 the 'Bolt-action Rifle of the Century.'^[3]

Throughout its life, the Model 70 has been offered in manygrades and styles. 1936through 1963 Model 70

The pre-'64 Model 70's were manufactured from 1936 through 1963after which time significant changes in the design and manufactureof the rifles were made. Pre-'64 Model 70s bring a substantialprice premium due to a public perception that they were better, asthey had several desirable features (Mauser-type controlled roundfeed, cut checkering) that the post-'64 version did not. Pre-'64Model 70 Winchester rifles can best be identified by serial number andthe presence of a fore-end screw to secure the barrel to the stock.^[4] Model70 rifles with serial numbers below 700,000 ^[5] are thepre-'64 variety.

Pre'64 Model 70 Action (Controlled Round Feed, CRF)

The original Model 70 quickly established an excellentreputation with American sportsmen. It was a high-quality action ofconsiderable strength, with 2 forward locking lugs and aMauser-type non-rotating claw extractor. The key benefit of theMauser-type extractor compared to later versions is that itcaptures the rim of a cartridge as it is fed upwards from themagazine and controls its journey forward into the rifle's chamber.This feed is called 'controlled round feeding' and is favored by anumber of shooters, especially those who pursue dangerous game. Theejector was of the blade type similar to that of the Mauser 98, butconsidered superior as it did not require a Mauser-type slotthrough the left locking lug; instead there was a slot in the boltface below the locking lug, leaving both forward lugs solid andhence stronger. The main benefit of the blade type ejector is it issimpler and perhaps more reliable (being considered lesssusceptible to ingress of foreign matter) when compared to thelater post-'64 plunger ejector in the bolt face controlled by acoil spring.

Other significant features of this action include a threeposition wing type safety (retained throughout Model 70production), a cone breeching system that helps prevent bullet nosedamage while loading a cartridge from the magazine, machined steeltrigger guard and floor plate, one piece bolt construction, and atrigger adjustable for pull weight and over-travel.

1964through 1991 Model 70

Competing as it did with the Remington Model700, it was decided that changes needed to be made in the faceof rising labour costs. Accordingly, in 1964 Winchester made anumber of design changes to the Model 70. Few to none of thesechanges were popular with the rifle-buying public, or with the USMilitary. The changes included dropping the controlled round feedfeature, a change to the basic stock shape and the use of impressedchequering rather than cut chequering.

JackO'Connor, long a proponent of the Model 70, wrote about thepost-'64 version that '. . .I was informed by Winchesterbrass that the Model 70 was being redesigned. I told them that Iwas glad to get the information so I could lay in four or five morebefore they loused the rifle up. Then I saw the pilot model of 'NewModel 70.' At the first glimpse I like to fell into a swoon. Theaction was simplified, the trigger guard and floor plate made of aflimsy looking one-piece stamping.' Despite this initial reaction,O'Connor grudgingly went on to say, 'Actually the post-1964 Model70 is not a bad rifle in spite of the fact that rifle aficionadoshave never taken it to their bosoms the way they did itspredecessor. It is a stronger action than the pre-1964. The head ofthe bolt encloses the head of the case. It has a small, neat hookextractor, which is adequate. With this extractor the cartridge isnot as surely controlled as it is with the Mauser-type extractor. However, the new modelseldom gives feeding problems.'^[6]

Post '64 Model 70Action (Push Feed)

In order to reduce manufacturing costs in the face of higherlabour rates, rifles manufactured from 1964 to 1992 differed fromearly Model 70s in the following ways:

• The bolt was changed significantly. The bolt face was enclosedso that it fully surrounded the cartridge rim, in a similar way tothe Remington 700 bolt. While cheaper to manufacture than theundercut bolt face needed for controlled feed actions, it is alsostronger, providing more support to the cartridge case head, andbetter contains escaping gases in the event of a case rupture. Thenew bolt also differed from the old in that (also like theRemington 700) it was manufactured in 3 pieces (the bolt head, bodyand handle) and brazed together. The brazing is so well done it isvery difficult to see the joints. There is no compromise instrength due to the 3-piece construction.

• The Mauser-type non-rotating claw type extractor (incompatiblewith a fully-enclosed bolt head) was replaced with a small wedgetype extractor that does not engage the cartridge rim as it risesfrom the magazine to the chamber but rather pushes the cartridgeinto the chamber. As the bolt handle is turned down into the lockedposition, the new extractor clips over the cartridge rim. The newextractor is perfectly reliable, although it grips less of the caserim and is not as elegant as the Mauser-type claw extractor.

• Hammer-forged barrels were introduced.

• The machined steel trigger guard and floor plate were replacedwith parts made from an aluminium alloy to reduce weight using theassembly from the pre-1964 Featherweight version.

• Some models featured walnut stocks with chequering that wasimpressed onto the wood rather than cut into it as on the earlyModel 70's, further reducing manufacturing costs.

The new action was severely criticized by riflemen for itslesser amount of control and its supposed unreliability, making theoriginal action even more prized. In reality, many of the changescould be considered improvements, making the action stronger ^[7]. Anypost-'64 Model 70 rifle that is not designated as a 'Classic' ismost likely to have the post-'64 action. For normal use, the actionthrough its design is no less reliable, although the simplifiedconstruction is less elegant. This action has been further improvedover the years, and is now generally on par with the CRF action.Because the bolt does not actively grip the cartridge until thebolt handle is turned down into the locked position, the post-'64system is supposedly more vulnerable to jamming or beinginadvertently closed on an empty breech (i.e. failing to load a newround) if operated under duress, especially if the rifle is heldupside down or on its side. In design terms (enclosed bolt face,plunger ejector, 3-piece brazed bolt construction) it is fairlysimilar to the Remington Model 700 which has a worldwide followingand is considered to be very reliable. All things considered, innormal situations there is not much to choose between them, apartfrom personal preference.

1968 Model70

In 1968 further revisions were made to the Model 70 in part toaddress consumer concerns ^[8]. An'anti-bind' feature was introduced to make operation of the actionsmoother, which comprised a groove in an extended right locking lugoperating on a rib on the right side of the receiver. This made theaction noticeably smoother to operate and has been retained to thepresent day. A steel floorplate (but the alloy trigger guard wasretained) and stainless magazine follower were introduced,partially revoking changes introduced in the 1964 model.

1992 to2006 Model 70

Starting in 1992, Winchester re-introduced many features of thepre-'64 rifles, while also continuing to manufacture less expensivevariants. The Post-'92 Model 70 is an extensive rifle line thatboasts nearly all of the features of the original line, but withsome updated equipment, such as the Controlled Round PushFeed action and synthetic stocks. The popular Shadow variantsfeature black resin stocks,which reduce the price of the firearm significantly, and hold upbetter than wood stocks over time. Some of the modern rifles alsouse high performance McMillan or Bell and Carlson fiberglassstocks, though these rifles tend to be expensive. Particular modelsfeature a one-piece aluminum pillar block bedding for greateraccuracy, and some models have fluting of the barrel to reduceweight and vent the barrel for additional cooling. Carbon fiber barrelsare also found on select models to reduce weight and dissipate heatfaster. Walnut stocks arestill found across the line in satin finishes, and laminated walnut stocks are added to themix for structural stability in extreme dry or wet conditions. TheModel 70 is offered in all of the previous chamberings as theoriginal, and is now supplemented with newer rounds, including theWinchester Short Magnum (WSM)and Winchester Super Short Magnum (WSSM) cartridges, which aremagnum loaded rounds, but are shorter in length and wider indiameter, so spent cartridges take less time to eject and use lesspowder. However, these short magnum cartridges reduce magazinecapacity and feeding reliability, due to their extra width andrebated rim.

Model 70Classic

In 1992, Winchester began producing a controlled round feedModel 70 that was marketed as the 'Classic' model. This versionre-introduced the CRF feature, while retaining the 'anti-bind'locking lug groove bolt guide of the 1968 push feed model. The useof modern CNCmanufacturing techniques allowed Winchester to re-introduce the CRFfeature at a competitive price.

Around this time, Browning, which is owned by the same parentcompany as USRAC, Giat Corp, of France, introduced the BOSSaccuracy system. The term ‘BOSS’ is an acronym for BallisticOptimising Shooting System. The device attaches to the muzzle endof the barrel and allows the natural harmonics, commonly known asbarrel whip, caused during the bullet’s passage down the bore, tobe refined and controlled. By adjusting the device for optimumperformance in the individual rifle, accuracy is brought to peaklevel. Winchester Model 70s equipped with the BOSS provide asignificant improvement in accuracy for a production rifle.Currently, only Browning rifles are available with the BOSS.

Later, Winchester expanded the Classic line, putting the Classicaction on all their modern stocks, giving a wide range of choice inrifle types. This basically lets the buyer choose an action, thenchoose a stock to one's liking. Both pre- and post-'64 versions ofthe Model 70 actions have their strengths and weaknesses ^[9].

1992 Classic Model (Controlled Round Feed and Controlled Round PushFeed)

At the same time as the CRF feature was re-introduced, a recentinnovation allowed the short extractor used on the post-'64 modelsto ride over the extraction groove on a cartridge, givingcontrolled feeding without the expense of the long Mauser typeextractor. This was called Controlled Round Push Feed.This is achieved by the use of the post-'64 extractor, combinedwith the pre-'64 bolt face relieved at the bottom allowing theround to engage the bolt face from underneath.

LawEnforcement Use

The Winchester Model 70 series rifles are marketed as sniperrifles for military forces and law enforcement agencies under theFabrique Nationale banner as the SpecialPolice Rifle (SPR) and the Patrol Bolt Rifle (PBR).

The FN Special Police Rifle has thestandard Winchester Model 70 rifle action, receiver and magazinesystem but the rifle is fitted with a heavier barrel and with theMcMillan series tactical rifle stocks.

The FN Patrol Bolt Rifle has the standard features of theoriginal Winchester Model 70 rifle but the rifle is designed foruse by police officers in patrol cars with the rifle having a shortand compact barrel so it would allow the rifle to be stored in apolice car. The FN Patrol Bolt Rifle is also marketed with acompensator on the muzzle of the rifle's barrel.

MilitaryUse

The United States Marine Corpsissued a very small number of the pre-1964 Winchester Model 70rifles during the Korean Conflict, for use as sniper weapons.During the early years of the Vietnam war, Model 70's were againthe premier choice in Marine sniper rifles, until they werereplaced by the Remington Model 700 series bolt-actionrifles in the mid-1960s. The Remington Model 700 became the basisfor the M40 series sniper rifle that is in currentU.S. Marine Corps service today.

One of the reasons the U.S. Marine Corps replaced theirWinchester Model 70s was that the post-1964 variants of the Model70 did not meet U.S. Marines' standards. Despite the introductionof the Remington Model 700 rifle, the pre '64 Winchester Model 70was still used by the US Marine Corps' scout/sniper teams duringthe Vietnam Waralongside the Remington Model 700 rifle. The original wood stockswere found to be warping in both rifles after a few years ofservice and both rifles were given fiberglass stocks to remedy the problem.Existing Model 70s still in service have had their stocks replacedwith a McMillan fiberglass stock, such as that found on the CustomExtreme Weather variant.

One of the best known U.S. Marine Corps snipers who used theWinchester Model 70 during the Vietnam War was Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcockwho used a Winchester Model 70 sniper rifle chambered in .30-06Springfield.

A new era

On March 31, 2006 U.S. RepeatingArms closed the New Haven, Conn. plant where Winchester riflesand shotguns were produced for 140 years.[1] Thisresulted in hiatus of the production of the Winchester Model 70rifle and Winchester Model 1300 pump action shotgun and the end ofthe Model 94 lever action rifle. OtherWinchester models however, are still produced in other regions suchas Asia and Europe.

On August 15, 2006, Olin Corporation, owner of the Winchestertrademarks, announced that it had entered into a new licenseagreement with Browning to make Winchester brand rifles andshotguns, though not at the closed Winchester plant in New Haven.Browning, based in Morgan, Utah, and the former licensee, U.S.Repeating Arms Company, are both subsidiaries of FN Herstal.

In October, 2007, FN Herstal announced thatit would produce Pre-'64 Winchester Model 70 rifles at its facilityin Columbia, South Carolina, where it currently manufactures the M240, M249,and M16 for the UnitedStates military, as well as its SPR and PBRlines, which are, in fact, variants of the Pre-64 Model 70. ^[10]

As of March 2008, Olin still owns the Winchester name and thenew Winchester Model 70 rifles are now made in Columbia, SC.^[11] Inregards to the FN Special Police Rifle and the Patrol Bolt Rifle,it appears that production on these two firearms is stillcontinuing at Fabrique Nationale's US factories despite the closureof the Winchester factory in New Haven and production on theWinchester Model 70 there ceasing.

Your gun was made in 1977 It's very hard to put a value on a gunright now. Everybody's broke and they're hurting for cash. You cancheck the 'blue book ' value of the gun, or you can take it to acertified appraiser, but there's a whole lot of people out therethat are hard up for cash and are forced to let their fire arms go'for cheap'. Unless you're in dire straights, it's a bad time tosell, and if you're just curious, it's a bad time to ask about aprice. It's not worth what it was 2 years ago. Your local gun shopis pretty much going to 'low ball' you on the price because theyneed to make a profit to keep their doors open. If the gun isn't a'hot item', they're going to offer you peanuts for it because theycan't afford to tie up their working capitol in a gun that's goingto sit on the shelf for a year. You can get a pretty good idea ofthe current value with a little homework. It you think you have anolder gun, write down the serial and model number that is stampedin the barrel and go to: http://armscollectors.com/sn/windates.htmThis will give you a date of manufacture. If there's a letterstamped in the frame that's near the serial number, but not rightin line with the number, (like maybe over or under the number),it's a revision code, ignore it. If the letter is obviously part ofthe serial number, the gun is fairly new and it wont be listed. Ifthe gun was made after 2005, or if it was made anywhere butHartford Ct., it's realistically worth 50 to 75% of the originalprice, even with the box. If it's older it will be worth a bitmore. If it was made before 1964, it might be worth more, MAYBE alot more. Take a very close look at the gun. What sort of conditionare the metal parts in? Is the blue color worn off in places? Arethere rust spots or pits in the metal? Shine a flashlight down thebarrel and look inside. Are there black dots in there that won'tcome off with a cleaning brush? Are there any noticeable bulgesaround the exterior of the barrel or rings around the inside?(Places where the reflection looks different and forms a bandaround the interior of the barrel.) Next look at the stock, is thewood cracked? What sort of shape is the finish in? The wood comesin different grades, are there any small knots? Is the grain verystraight or very curly? Now look at the sights. Are they still onthe gun or have they been replaced with a scope? Do they appear tobe the same age as the gun? Do they look like the sights on theother guns you see for sale on-line? Are there any extra holes inthe metal where a sight may have been removed? All these factorsare important to the value of any collectable firearm, andWinchester collectors are fussier then most. Google the modelnumber of the gun and check the on-line AUCTIONS, compare your gunto ones of a similar year in a similar condition with similarfeatures to find out what they're currently selling for. Don't goby the asking price at an on line dealer, every seller out there islooking for a sucker and most of those guns will still be thereuntil the ad expires. You need to find out what the gun actuallysold for. Search the auctions, bookmark the guns that are similarto yours and go back to see what they've actually sold for once theauction ends. Finally, if you're looking for a value for insurancepurposes, or to settle an estate, you're going to have to spend themoney and go to a certified appraiser, nothing anybody on linetells you or you find in a book is going to mean a thing incourt.
