Pros
A highly imaginative universe: Destiny's worlds are incredibly well-designed, focusing on discovery and edge-of-your-seat excitement. You can explore post-apocalyptic future Earth or the fields of Mars, or fly to Venus. Get caught up in firefights that suddenly break out. Destiny employs a variety of talent, including Peter Dinkage from 'Game of Thrones' voicing your sidekick and even a concluding song by Paul McCartney.
Choose your own path: You have the freedom to play however you want. The three classes of Guardian characters give you different special abilities and aesthetics but do not limit how you approach the game. PVP mode demonstrates that any class can make for a dangerous adversary, depending on the skill of the player. Play as a run-and-gun Warlock or a precision-shooting Titan.

High replay value: The single-player missions take roughly 10-12 hours, but that's if you perform the bare-bones requirements. After completion there's still plenty to accomplish: group runs, strike missions, raids, solo quests for better gears, and so on.
Cons
Is anybody out there?: The game encourages playing with others via online connection, which can be hit or miss. Nearby players come in and out of your world, conveying that there are other Guardians nearby. Interaction is limited to gestures and emoticons. Voice chats are restricted to hunting parties called Fireteams. But without a group finder, forming Fireteams (outside of your friends) and strike missions can be difficult.
Trial-by-fire PVP: PVP combat seems to suffer from a balance issue. From experience, the Titan class seems the most suited for PVP, due to their special ability, although Warlocks can counter with their nova bombs, and Hunters have a much higher learning curve before they can be competitive. Fights tends to favor fast automatic weapons more than slow and steady handguns or sniper rifles.
A familiar road: The story and, ultimately, the experience of Destiny is very similar to Halo's. The world is threatened by a mysterious force, and so on and so forth. The story hinted at bigger and greater things but failed to elaborate on any plot points in details. This, combined with a detached performance by Peter Dinkage as your new Cortana-like assistant, makes for a much weaker narrative.
Bottom Line
Despite design flaws, Destiny delivers an addictive experience that combines immersive, competitive gameplay with plenty of freedom that makes it all seem organic. Gameplay is fun, despite the minor PVP balance issue, and will keep you coming back. The game environment is one of the biggest selling points: It is the prettiest game to be released so far this year. Destiny is definitely a shooter, but it's very different from what we've come to expect from the genre -- and whether it's a breakthrough in first-person shooters is debatable.
