This study does not attempt to address the issue of determining to what degree pirated books represent financial loss to the industry as it does not estimate how many free downloads might have otherwise resulted in a sale. In other words, this study does not attempt to answer the question, “How many of these pirated books would have been purchased legally if piracy was not an option?”

American college students struggling to afford textbooks are sharing copies of their books illegally on TextbookNova, the Pirate Bay and some of the same torrent sites that crippled the music industry. Many of the most popular books are available for free, with a correlation between the number of downloaders and the price of the book.
The College Board estimated in January that the average student spends $1,200 annually on textbooks. The price of books skyrocketed by 82 percent in the years between 2002 and 2013, a number high enough to convince 65 percent of students to decide against buying a book, according to a Government Accountability Office survey. Ninety-four percent of the GAO respondents who didn’t buy a book out of financial concerns admitted they did so even with the expectation that it would hurt them academically.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics released numbers indicating the price of textbooks has risen by 800 percent over the past 30 years.
Some educators have begun to utilize open source technology, but numbers on popular piracy sites make it clear those professors are the exception to the norm. Students are uploading PDF copies of the books and sharing them on textbook-centric peer-to-peer sites as well as torrent behemoths like the Pirate Bay and KickAss Torrents.
Net core 2.1 download. With Cloud Foundry, I find myself constantly having to be mindful of SDKs and runtimes and have to use the global.json to ensure that what I'm building locally can actually be pushed into a Cloud Foundry container based on what dotnet core buildpack has been applied on the servers and what versions of the SDKs it supports.
A copy of “Digital Systems Principles And Applications” by Ronald Tocci, for instance, would cost an introductory technology student $130 on Amazon. That student, if not concerned with breaking the law, could download the same book for free on either the Pirate Bay or KickAss.
The size of each book, as a PDF, rarely exceeds 200 MB. The relatively small size of that file has inspired pirates to curate their own curriculums by posting a single file that contains perhaps a dozen textbooks on the same topic. An umbrella torrent file with the name “Electronics Introduction Textbooks” could easily attract thousands of downloads from these various sites, though not every file is especially reliable.
The Book Industry Study Group, a group that represents publishers and wholesalers, conducted a survey of 1,600 students in August and found that “students continue to become more sophisticated in acquiring their course materials at the lowest cost as illicit and alternative acquisition behaviors, from scanned copies to illegal downloads to the use of pirated websites, continue to increase in frequency.”
And word is spreading. Vocativ.com examined social media statistics to determine that the number of tweets about textbook pdfs totaled in the hundreds each year between 2008 and 2012. Beginning in 2013 the “textbook” and “pdf” was used thousands of times each month.

Unlike music and movie piracy, which most observers agree is simply theft, there’s also a political component to downloading copyright books online. Sites like the Pirate Bay attract millions of visitors every day but the content that’s available there is uploaded by a relatively small group working on the ideology that all information, no matter the cost, should be free. Web chatter proves that this kind of mentality is especially pervasive when books, and therefore knowledge, are the subject.

While the publishing industry hasn’t released any recent number on piracy losses, sites that are dedicated exclusively to textbook piracy have sprouted up over the past few years. BookFi.org, LibGen.org and, most famously, TextbookNova have all become common terms around U.S. campuses.
“I started doing it more over the last two years,” a New York University student who identified himself only as Stephen told Vocativ. “There were incomplete figures and some were completely gone” but, he added, “I probably saved a couple thousand over the years.”
